As the
nation celebrates Barack Obama's historic
inauguration, we all ask God to keep our new
President safe and give him wisdom, strength, and
courage to govern our country well. At the same time,
we are preparing to mark the grim anniversary of Roe
v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court ruling which
overturned all state and federal laws that prohibited
abortion. Our prayers also extend to all of the
victims of the nearly 50 million abortions that have
been procured since the ruling.
Our friends at Grassroots Films -- who brought you the
award winning films Fishers of
Men and The Human
Experience -- bring together both
of these historic events in a new 30-second spot
for CatholicVote.com that simply needs to
be seen and shared with
others.
Congratulations to Reverend Brothers James Dominic Brent, O.P. and John Chrysostom Kozlowski, O.P., who were recently ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacons. Ordained by the Most Reverend Martin D. Holley, Auxiliary Bishop of Washington, DC, in the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, our brothers will now begin their lives of sacramental ministry in the Washington area as they continue their formation for the holy priesthood.
Brothers James and John Chrysostom are no strangers to St. Louis Bertrand; each spent a summer here serving at the St. Vincent de Paul Center and assisting at the parish. Let us continue to support these fine young brothers with our prayers and ask God to bring to completion the good work he has begun in them.

This week,
there is no shortage of tributes to the late Richard
John Neuhaus. A priest of the Archdiocese of New York
and founder of First
Things, Neuhaus helped
thousands to make sense of the competing claims of
religion, politics, and culture. Time Magazine, in
1995, named him one of the 25 Most Influential
Evangelicals in America.
In May of 2006, Fr. Neuhaus delivered the
Commencement Address at the Dominican House of
Studies. This "honorary Dominican" spoke eloquently
on the Dominican charism and the importance in
today's world of "thinking faith" and "faithful
thinking." The fulltext can be found
here, and is well worth a
read.
May this good and faithful servant rest peacefully in
the arms of his Savior.
